There are three predominant traditions of herbal medicine: Ayurvedic, Traditional Chinese, and Western. Ayurvedic herbalism remains a thriving form of medicine in India and dates back 3,000 years. Various aspects of Chinese Medicine were developed over 5,000 years and streamlined to become the current system of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The ancient Greeks and Romans laid the foundation for Western herbalism, which is now predominantly practiced in Europe and North America. Chinese and Ayurvedic herbal medicine are considered to be more advanced. They have refined diagnostic elements, classification systems, and impressive written records and publications on the history and efficacy of herbal medicine.
Herbal medicine continues to evolve, grow and reassert itself with positive clinical trials, ongoing research, and a community of herbalists dedicated to carrying on its vital wisdom. Cutting-edge herbalists are practicing Planetary Herbalism; they are applying the theories and concepts of one system of herbal medicine to the herbs of another. This advances the uses of herbs globally and increases their effectiveness for each individual.
